Gail Kaufmann, Director of Communications for Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society gave a very interesting presentation on the operations of the Society. The Society was started in 2016 by three men that saw a need. They cover Horseshoe Bay to Chilliwack. Every day in the lower mainland there is a cancer patient that needs someone to drive them to the hospital. There are now about 430 volunteer drivers. The budget of the Society is $675,000, which covers the cost of fuel for all the transportation. To date this year the drivers in Burnaby alone have made 2266 trips covering 47637 kilometers. There is a prequalification procedure and also a criminal record check required.
